Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Do people really live in igloos?

The Big Idea

Not really! Most people today live in regular houses, but snow houses are real! Inuit in the Canadian Arctic have built snow houses for hundreds of years. They are called iglus, and they make a warm shelter.

Cut the Blocks

Step one: cut the blocks. Hunters in winter cut hard-packed snow into big blocks, a bit like bricks. They need great skill and lots of practice to do it well, and the snow must be just right.

Build a Dome

Step two: build a dome. The blocks are stacked in a spiral that curves inward into a dome. A dome shape is very strong, because it spreads out weight evenly.

Snow Keeps Warm

Step three: snow keeps heat in. Snow is full of tiny pockets of air, which keep the wind out and body heat in. A snow house can be warmer inside than the winter wind outside.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The walls are made of snow blocks. The blocks spiral into a strong dome. Tiny air pockets in the snow hold in warmth. Today, most families live in modern houses, and snow houses are used by hunters as winter shelters.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Inuit have built iglus for hundreds of years. Today most families live in modern houses. Some hunters still build a snow shelter on winter trips. Never dig or build a snow cave on your own.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Stack sugar cubes or toy blocks into a small dome shape. Try a few shapes and see which holds up best. Domes spread out weight evenly! Share what you discover with a grown-up.
