Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do icebreaker ships break through thick ice?

The Big Idea

An icebreaker is a ship built to crush its way through thick ice! It has a super strong steel hull and a bow shaped like a sloping spoon. The engines push it up onto the ice, and its heavy weight does the breaking.

Strong Steel

Step one: a very strong hull. An icebreaker has thick steel sides, much stronger than a normal ship, so the ice cannot dent it. Its rounded shape lets ice slide away instead of gripping.

Ride Up

Step two: ride up onto the ice. The powerful engines push the sloping bow up on top of the ice. Then the ship's heavy weight presses down and cracks the ice below.

Slide Aside

Step three: pieces slide aside. Broken chunks slide along the smooth hull and leave an open channel behind. Canada's Coast Guard icebreakers clear paths like this in Arctic waters and the St. Lawrence River.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The steel hull is extra thick to handle the squeeze of the ice. The sloping bow is shaped like a spoon. Big engines give the push, and the heavy ship adds the crunch. Then the broken ice slides away.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some icebreakers can break ice more than 6 feet thick. That is taller than many grown-ups! Icebreakers lead other ships through the ice like guides. Crews stay warm and safe inside.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, spread a thin layer of whipped cream or frosting in a tray. Gently push a toy boat onto it. Watch the top layer break as the boat moves! Share what you discover with a grown-up.

Outro

Icebreakers ride up and crush the ice with their weight. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
