Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is the edge of the sea ice a feeding hotspot?

The Big Idea

The edge of the sea ice is a feeding hotspot because the meltwater there sets off a feast! Fresh meltwater floats on top of the salty sea. That layer is sunny and calm, perfect for tiny plants. Let's follow the feast!

Meltwater Layer

Step one: meltwater. When ice melts at its edge, fresh meltwater floats on top of the saltier sea. The layer stays sunny and calm, because the light-weight fresh water does not mix with the salty water below.

Algae Blooms

Step two: algae bloom. Algae bloom in the sunny, calm layer. Then tiny animals come to eat them, and bigger hunters are never far behind.

Follow the Feast

Step three: a growing crowd. Fish, seabirds, seals, and whales follow. The ice edge moves with the seasons, and animals follow the feast as it goes along.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Meltwater floats on top of the sea. Algae bloom in the sunshine. Tiny grazers gather to eat them. And big visitors, like whales, follow the food.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The ice edge can move many miles in a week. In spring it moves toward the pole as the ice melts. Animals travel along with it, like a moving restaurant. Never go near the edge of ice or open water.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, float a piece of paper in the sink and drop a few bread crumbs near its edge. Where do they gather? Food gathers at boundaries! Share what you discover with a grown-up.
