Why Do Whales Visit Polar Seas to Eat?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do whales visit polar seas to eat?

The Big Idea

Whales visit polar seas to eat because summer there is an enormous buffet! The water is full of krill and fish. Whales feast for months and store up lots of fat. Let's see why!

Summer Buffet

Step one: a summer buffet. Polar summers bring seas full of krill and fish. Humpback, blue, and minke whales swim there to feed for months, sometimes thousands of miles from home.

Gaining Fat

Step two: store fat. While feeding, the whales gain lots of fat. That fat is like a savings account of energy, ready to spend later.

Baby Time

Step three: head to warmer water. Many whales then swim to warmer waters to have their babies. There, food is scarce, so the polar feast powers the whole year of whale life.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The polar sea is full of krill and small fish. Whales feed there all summer. They store the energy as fat. Then many travel to warm water to have babies.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A humpback whale may eat over a ton of krill and fish in a day. A ton is about the weight of a small car. Whale songs, especially from humpbacks, can travel for many miles under the water. Watch whales only from boats with trained guides.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Estimate your own food for a day in kitchen items. Compare it with a whale's ton of food in one day. Whales really are hungry travelers! Share what you discover with a grown-up.
