Why Is the Arctic Willow Shorter than Your Shoe?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is the Arctic willow shorter than your shoe?

The Big Idea

The Arctic willow is shorter than your shoe because staying low keeps it safe and warm! It is a real willow, but it grows sideways instead of up. Hugging the ground helps it survive the Arctic wind. Short, but mighty!

Strong Winds

Step one: strong winds. The Arctic is windy, and the air high above the ground is very cold. A tall plant would be blasted and dried out by that wind.

Hug the Ground

Step two: stay low. The Arctic willow grows so low that it is often only a few inches tall. Close to the soil, it is warmer and less windy. That is why it stays small, even though it is a willow.

Roots Spread Wide

Step three: spread out. It grows sideways instead of up. Its roots spread wide to catch water and hold on tight.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A tall tree catches lots of wind. The tiny willow stays down low. The wind blows right over its head, instead of knocking it down. And its wide roots hold it firmly in place.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some dwarf willows are wider than they are tall. Small plants lose less heat and water to the wind. They keep their leaves low where the snow can cover them in winter. In the Arctic, tiny can be tough!

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw a tall tree and a flat Arctic willow next to it. Add wind arrows blowing across both. Why does a low plant survive wind better? Share what you discover with a grown-up.
