Why Do Reindeer Eyes Turn From Gold to Blue?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do reindeer eyes turn from gold to blue?

The Big Idea

Reindeer eyes change color with the seasons, from gold in summer to blue in winter! The change helps their eyes see better when the light is very different. It happens in a mirror-like layer at the back of the eye. How cool is that?

Bright Summer

Step one: a bright summer. In the bright Arctic summer, reindeer eyes look golden. The Sun shines almost all day, so there is plenty of light, and the eyes do not need extra help.

Dim Winter

Step two: a dim winter. In the dim winter, reindeer eyes turn deep blue. The change happens in a mirror-like layer at the back of the eye that helps with seeing in dim light.

More Light

Step three: catch more light. In the blue stage, the eye collects more light. That helps the reindeer see during the long, dark months, when the Sun hardly comes up at all.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! In summer, the days are very bright. Reindeer eyes look golden. In winter, the light grows dim, and the nights are long. And their eyes turn blue to catch more light.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Reindeer can also see some ultraviolet light. That helps them spot lichens and other things on bright snow. Their eyes are really good at working in dim light. Never stare at the Sun, even on a snowy day.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Look at a friend's eyes in bright light, then in dim light. What changes? The dark center gets bigger in dim light to let in more light! Share what you discover with a grown-up.
