Why Do Snowy Owls Have Feathers on Their Feet?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do snowy owls have feathers on their feet?

The Big Idea

Snowy owls have feathers on their feet to wear built-in fluffy socks! The feathers trap warm air and keep skin from touching cold snow. That helps owls rest on the frozen ground without freezing. It is a super cozy design!

Windy Tundra

Step one: a cold, open home. Snowy owls live on the Arctic tundra, a wide, treeless land where cold wind blows. There are no trees to block the wind, so owls need very good winter gear, from head to toe.

Feathery Socks

Step two: feathers on the feet. Thick feathers cover an owl's toes like fluffy socks. They trap warm air and keep the skin away from the cold snow, just like our wool socks keep our toes cozy.

Super Insulation

Step three: thick body feathers. A snowy owl's body feathers are among the best insulation of any bird. That lets it rest on snowy ground without freezing.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Here is a big, white snowy owl. Thick feathers cover its legs and toes. They work like fluffy socks. So the owl can stand on snow and stay warm.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Snowy owls often hunt in daylight during the Arctic summer. In summer the Sun barely sets, so owls hunt when prey is active. Their white feathers help them blend into snowy ground. Admire wild owls from a distance, never too close.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Slip on thick wool socks and walk on a cool floor. Compare it with bare feet. Now imagine owl socks made of feathers! Share what you discover with a grown-up.
