What Does the Sky Look Like in the Blue Glow of Polar Twilight?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What does the sky look like in the blue glow of polar twilight?

The Big Idea

Polar twilight glows in deep blue, purple, and pink before the Sun returns and after it leaves! It can last for days or even weeks. Let's gaze at the sky.

Long Twilight

Step one: long twilight. Before the Sun returns and after it leaves, the polar sky has a long twilight. It can last for days or even weeks.

Blue, Purple, Pink

Step two: blue, purple, and pink. The sky glows with deep blue, purple, and pink. Without a bright Sun, the light seems to come from everywhere. Snow reflects the glow and makes it brighter.

The Blue Hour

Step three: the blue hour. Photographers and sailors love this blue hour. But it can be hard to judge distances in such soft light.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Deep blue fills the sky overhead. Purple glows along the edges. Pink shines near the horizon. Snow and mountains look like silhouettes against it. Soft, quiet, and magical.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some Arctic towns have a few hours of blue twilight at noon in midwinter. Snow reflects the soft blue light and makes everything glow. Photographers plan their days around it. Look at the sky only with a grown-up, and never at the Sun. Twilight is a great time for stargazing.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, be an artist! Make a twilight painting with blue, purple, and pink on dark paper. Add the shape of a snowy mountain or a house. Which colors blend best? Hang your painting up!
