Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What is the Greenland ice sheet?
The Big Idea
The Greenland ice sheet is a giant layer of ice that covers about four fifths of Greenland, the biggest island on Earth! It is up to two miles thick. Let's take a trip north.
Biggest Island
Step one: the biggest island. Greenland is the biggest island on Earth. About four fifths of it is covered by an ice sheet.
Snow Becomes Ice
Step two: snow becomes ice. Snow falls on top and squeezes the older snow below into solid ice. In places the ice is up to two miles, or 3 kilometers, thick.
Flowing to the Sea
Step three: flowing to the sea. The ice slowly flows outward and ends in glaciers that reach the sea. The edges of the island are rocky, and green in summer.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Greenland is a giant island in the north. Most of it hides under a huge ice sheet. Glaciers flow out to the sea. In summer, the coast turns green with plants. Ice in the middle, color around the edges.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Greenland's name means 'green land'. It is the biggest island on Earth. Only about one fifth of the land is free of ice. Look at Greenland on a globe with a grown-up. Most people live along the ice-free coast.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Find Greenland on a globe and see how large it is. Cover most of it with white paper. That white paper is the ice sheet. How much green land is left?
