Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do birds that visit your backyard depend on rainforests?

The Big Idea

Many birds that visit your backyard spend part of the year in tropical forests! They nest in Canada and the United States in summer. Then they travel south to Central and South America for winter. Some are tiny, but they are great travelers.

Summer Nesting

Step one: summer nesting. Many songbirds nest in Canada and the United States in spring and summer. They raise their chicks there when insects are plentiful, since baby birds need lots of food.

Winter Travel

Step two: the winter trip. In fall, some small songbirds fly thousands of miles south. They spend winter in the forests of Central and South America, often traveling at night.

Forest Habitat

Step three: forest habitat. In the tropics, they need shady, leafy places to find food and rest before flying north again. Warblers, thrushes, and orioles may use rainforest or shade-grown coffee farms.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at their journey! In summer, they nest up north. In fall, they make a long flight. In winter, they rest in warm forests. Some even use shade-grown coffee farms.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some small songbirds fly thousands of miles each year. Warblers, thrushes, and orioles may spend winter in the tropics. Birds need safe places both at home and far away. Protecting forests in both places helps them.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, find a bird that visits your area. Look up where it spends the winter. Mark both places on a map. How far does it travel?
