Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do drones and lasers help scientists map a rainforest?
The Big Idea
Drones and lasers help scientists map a rainforest without climbing every tree! Drones take photos from above, and lasers measure the height of the forest. A computer puts it together into a 3D map.
Fly Over
Step one: fly over. Drones fly just above the treetops and take photos. The pictures show the shape and color of the canopy, from the tallest giants to the smallest trees.
Laser Pulses
Step two: laser pulses. Airplanes can send out quick pulses of laser light that bounce off the leaves and the ground. A computer times how long each pulse takes to return.
3D Map
Step three: a 3D map. The timing turns into a 3D map that shows how tall the trees are and where there are gaps. Scientists can measure a huge forest without climbing every tree.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at the mapping tools! A drone gives a bird's-eye view. Laser pulses bounce back off leaves and ground. The map shows tree heights in 3D. It can even reveal hidden ruins below the trees.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! A laser map can show tall and short trees at a glance. Gaps in the canopy show where light reaches the ground. Laser maps have found hidden ancient ruins under forests. Drones need a grown-up expert to fly them safely.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Build a pretend canopy from stacked blocks of different heights. Take a photo from above. Take another from the side. Which view shows how tall each block is?
Outro
Drones and lasers help us see whole forests at once. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
