What Is a Canopy Walkway, and Why Do People Build Them?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What is a canopy walkway, and why do people build them?

The Big Idea

A canopy walkway is a bridge of ropes and boards strung between tall trees! It lets people walk safely through the treetops. Walkways help us study the rainforest without hurting the forest floor.

Between Trees

Step one: a bridge between trees. Builders string ropes and boards between tall trees, high above the ground. Some walkways are more than 100 feet up, where the air is warmer and the sunshine is bright.

Eye-Level View

Step two: an eye-level view. On a walkway, people can watch birds and monkeys at eye level. Scientists can also collect samples and measure the weather, which is very different from down below.

Gentle on the Forest

Step three: gentle on the forest. Because people walk on the bridge, they do not trample plants on the forest floor. Students and visitors can learn about the forest safely with trained guides.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at the walkway! Tall trees hold up the ends. Strong ropes and cables carry the weight. Boards make the path to walk on. And up here, birds fly right past you.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some walkways are over 100 feet above the ground. They let scientists measure weather in the canopy. Visitors can see wildlife without trampling the forest floor. Follow the rules and hold on when you visit a real walkway.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, tie string between two chairs. Lay a cardboard strip across it. Test how much weight it holds using small toys. Which design holds the most?
