Why Does the Durian Fruit Smell So Strong?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does the durian fruit smell so strong?

The Big Idea

The durian fruit smells so strong because its smell is a signal to animals! In the forests of Southeast Asia, the smell calls hungry animals from far away. Those animals help spread the big seeds. A smell can be a message, just like a color or a song.

Spiky Fruit

Step one: a spiky fruit. Durian grows on tall trees in Southeast Asian rainforests. A single fruit is covered in thorns and can weigh several pounds.

A Strong Smell

Step two: a strong smell. The fruit gives off a pungent smell made of sulfur-containing chemicals. Some people love the smell, and others do not, and some hotels even ban the fruit.

Animal Guests

Step three: animal guests. The scent calls animals like orangutans, bats, and elephants, which can notice it from far away. They eat the fruit and carry its large seeds to new places, so new durian trees can grow far from the old one.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at the durian! The thorny husk protects the soft fruit inside. The smell drifts far through the forest. Animals like orangutans follow the scent. And the big seeds get carried away to sprout.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A durian can weigh several pounds. Its smell comes from sulfur-containing chemicals. Many hotels and trains in Southeast Asia ban the fruit because of its smell. Leave wild fruits for the animals.
