Why Does the Atlas Moth Have No Mouth as an Adult?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does the atlas moth have no mouth as an adult?

The Big Idea

The atlas moth has no working mouth as an adult because it does all its eating as a caterpillar! It stores up fat, and that fat powers its short adult life. Adult life is just long enough to find a partner and lay eggs.

Hungry Caterpillar

Step one: a hungry caterpillar. The atlas moth caterpillar eats a huge amount of leaves. It grows big and stores up lots of fat.

Wrap Up

Step two: the big change. The caterpillar spins a cocoon, and inside it slowly changes into a moth. Out comes one of the biggest moths in the world, with wings up to 10 inches across.

Short Life

Step three: a short adult life. The adult has no working mouth, so it lives off its stored fat for only a week or two. That is long enough to find a partner and lay eggs.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at the moth! The caterpillar does all the eating. Its body saves the fat as fuel. The adult has huge wings and flies for a short time. And then it lays eggs for the next generation.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Atlas moth wings can be 10 inches, or 25 centimeters, across. Adults live only a week or two. The wing tips look a bit like snake heads. Enjoy moths by watching them, and never grab their wings.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw a moth wing with a bold pattern. Make the tip look like a snake's head. Add eyes and a mouth. Why might that pattern scare off a bird?
