Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do hummingbirds and heliconia flowers fit together like a lock and key?

The Big Idea

Some rainforest hummingbirds and flowers fit together like a lock and key! The bird's beak and the flower's tube have the same curve. That perfect fit helps the right bird carry the right pollen.

Matching Shapes

Step one: matching shapes. Some rainforest hummingbirds have long, curved beaks. Certain flowers, like heliconia, have long, curved tubes. The two shapes match, like a lock and a key.

Sip Nectar

Step two: sip the nectar. The bird hovers in the air and slips its beak into the flower to sip sweet nectar. Its tongue flicks in and out very fast.

Carry Pollen

Step three: carry the pollen. As the bird feeds, pollen rubs onto its head or beak. It carries the pollen to the next flower, so the right pollen reaches the right kind of plant.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at the fit! The bird's beak is long and curved. The flower's tube curves the same way. Down at the bottom waits sweet nectar. And pollen brushes on the bird as it drinks.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A hummingbird's wings beat many times each second. A hummingbird tongue flicks in and out more than 10 times every second. Flowers shaped for one kind of bird do not waste pollen on the wrong visitors. Watch hummingbirds from far away so you do not scare them.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Bend a flexible straw. Try sliding it into a bent paper tube, like a curved flower. Turn the straw and see what changes. How does the straw's shape change how you reach inside?
