Why Do Some Ants Live Inside Special Trees?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some ants live inside special trees?

The Big Idea

Some ants live inside special trees because the tree gives them a home and food! In return, the ants protect the tree from hungry insects and smothering vines. Scientists call a team where both partners win mutualism.

A Hollow Home

Step one: a hollow home. Cecropia trees in tropical America have hollow stems with tiny doorways. Little Azteca ants move in and raise their young inside the stem.

Free Food

Step two: free food. The tree makes small food packets near the base of its leaves. The ants eat the packets, so the tenants never go hungry.

Ant Guards

Step three: ant guards. The ants chase away leaf-eating insects and trim off vines that could smother the tree. Scientists are careful around these trees, because the ants rush out to defend them.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at who gives what! The tree gives a safe place to live. The stem is hollow, just the right size for an ant colony. The tree also grows food packets for its tenants. And the ants guard the tree in return.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Both the tree and the ants get something good from the team. Mutualism is a science word that means both win. Ants can keep vines from growing over the tree and blocking its sunlight. Enjoy these trees from a distance, and never shake or poke them.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Make a list of what each partner gets. Write the tree's gift and the ants' gift. Draw a picture showing both gifts. Show your drawing to someone you love!
