Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do leafcutter ants carry pieces of leaves they never eat?

The Big Idea

Leafcutter ants carry leaf pieces home, but they never eat them! The leaves are food for a garden. The ants chew them into a soft green mulch, and a tiny fungus grows on it. That fungus is the ants' main food, so these ants are farmers!

Cut and Carry

Step one: cut and carry. Worker ants snip leaf pieces with their sharp jaws and march home holding them high, like tiny green sails. A big line of ants can look like a moving green river.

Make Mulch

Step two: make mulch. Inside the underground nest, smaller ants chew the leaves into a soft, damp paste. The paste is the perfect bed for a garden.

Grow Fungus

Step three: grow the fungus. The ants plant a special fungus on the mulch, weed out unwanted germs, and keep the garden clean. This farming teamwork has gone on for about 50 million years!

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at the ant farm! A leaf piece can weigh more than the ant carrying it. Some workers cut, some carry, and some tend the garden. The mulch is made from chewed leaves. And the fungus that grows there feeds the whole colony.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A big colony can strip leaves from a tree in about a day. Ants were farming fungus long before people farmed anything. A colony can have millions of ants working together. Watch ants from a distance and never touch them.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Cut leaf shapes from green paper, with a grown-up helping with the scissors. Carry one across the floor on a spoon. Pretend to be a leafcutter and count your trips. How many trips can you make in one minute?
