How Do Rainforest Plants Race Each Other for Sunlight?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do rainforest plants race each other for sunlight?

The Big Idea

Rainforest plants race each other for sunlight, and the race never ends! Down on the floor, it is very dark. Every plant has a strategy to reach the light, and each strategy is different.

Grow Fast

Step one: grow fast. Some trees shoot up fast and tall to reach the light. They use a lot of energy to win the race, and their wood is often light and soft.

Climb and Perch

Step two: climb and perch. Vines climb the trunks of other trees. Epiphytes live high up on branches, where the light is.

Wait Patiently

Step three: wait patiently. Others wait in the shade, growing very slowly. When a big tree falls and opens a gap, they grow quickly into the light.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Fast growers race up. Climbers borrow a trunk. Perchers start up high. Waiters pause until a gap opens. Many plans, one goal: sunlight. Each plant picks the plan that works for it.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! In a rainforest, being short in the dark can last for decades. Some seedlings wait for years for a patch of sky, growing only a little each year. A fallen tree opens a gap and starts a new race. The race builds the forest into green layers.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Plant three seeds in a tray. Place a book over one, a thin cloth over another, and nothing over the third. Which one grows tallest toward the light? Wash your hands when you finish.
