Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do so many animals live in the canopy instead of on the ground?

The Big Idea

So many animals live in the canopy because that is where the food and sunlight are! The treetops are full of leaves, flowers, and fruit. Many rainforest animals spend their whole lives up there.

Sunlight

Step one: sunlight. The top of the forest gets the most sunlight. So that is where leaves, flowers, and fruit grow best. Plants turn sunlight into food.

Lots of Food

Step two: lots of food. Leaf-eaters, fruit-eaters, and nectar-drinkers all find meals up high. And animals that eat those animals come, too, so the treetops hold a whole food web.

Safe Spaces

Step three: safe spaces. The canopy offers shelter and escape routes from some ground hunters. With so many different places to live, a huge share of rainforest species live in the treetops.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Sunlight powers the leaves. Leaves, flowers, and fruit make food. Branches and holes make shelter. And countless residents call it home. The canopy is a busy neighborhood, high in the sky.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Scientists think the canopy may hold more species than the ground does. Many canopy animals never touch the ground. Their whole lives, from eating to sleeping, happen in the treetops. That is why protecting tall trees protects them all.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw a simple pyramid of a rainforest food web. Put the Sun at the top. Then add leaves, fruit eaters, and hunters. Which layer has the most energy?
