How Can One Rainforest Tree Hold Thousands of Insects?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How can one rainforest tree hold thousands of insects?

The Big Idea

One rainforest tree can be a whole city for insects! Scientists counted thousands of insects living in the branches of a single treetop. A tree has many different places to live, and each place has its own residents.

Count Them

Step one: count them. Scientists hung sheets, nets, and traps in a few treetops. Then they counted every insect that dropped or flew in. It took months of careful work.

So Many Kinds

Step two: so many kinds. They found a huge number of beetles, ants, and bugs. Many of them were new to science, never named before. A whole treetop can hide thousands of kinds.

Many Rooms

Step three: many rooms. A single tree has bark, leaves, flowers, fruit, hollows, and moss. Each place is home to different insects, like rooms in a giant apartment building.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Bark hides beetles and bugs. Leaves feed caterpillars and more. Flowers attract insects looking for nectar. Moss and hollows shelter tiny creatures. That is a lot of neighbors, all in one tree!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some beetles live on only one kind of tree. That means losing that tree could mean losing the beetle. Insects are food for birds, frogs, and bats too, so they keep the forest food web going. Look, but do not touch wild insects.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Visit one tree in a park with a grown-up. Find three different places insects might live on it. Try the bark, the leaves, or the base. What would you find?
