Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do animals use vines as highways?

The Big Idea

Animals use woody vines called lianas as highways high above the ground! Lianas wrap from tree to tree, making bridges across gaps in the canopy. Crossing a vine is faster and safer than climbing down to the forest floor.

Vine Bridges

Step one: vine bridges. Lianas are woody vines that climb up one tree and stretch over to another. Together they make a web of bridges high in the canopy.

Busy Traffic

Step two: busy traffic. Monkeys, squirrels, lizards, and even ants run along the vines to cross gaps. They do not need to climb down and up again, which would waste a lot of energy.

Save Energy

Step three: save energy. Crossing on vines saves energy and keeps animals away from ground hunters. When vines are cut, some canopy animals have a hard time moving around the forest.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Lianas are woody vines. They link trees like bridges. Monkeys, lizards, and ants all travel on them. And the route avoids ground hunters. Vines connect the forest, so every animal can get around.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some lianas stretch hundreds of feet from root to tip. Their stems can be as thin as a rope or as thick as a person's leg. A forest with healthy vines helps its animals move around. Never swing on or cut vines in a wild forest.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, stretch a rope between two chairs. Roll a toy car or walk a small toy across it. How would a rope bridge help animals? Tell a grown-up your ideas!

Outro

Vines are highways in the sky for forest animals. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
