Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why are so many rainforest birds brightly colored?

The Big Idea

Rainforest birds wear bright colors to send messages! Colors help birds find friends, show they are healthy, and tell their own kind from look-alikes. In a dim, busy forest, bright feathers stand out.

Find a Friend

Step one: find a friend. In the dim forest, bright feathers help birds spot each other from far away. Colors and patterns also tell a bird which species it is looking at.

Show Health

Step two: show health. Some birds get their colors from the fruits they eat, so bright feathers can show a bird is well fed. Others make color with tiny structures inside the feather itself.

Special Eyes

Step three: special eyes. Birds can see colors that people cannot, even ultraviolet light. So a bird's feathers may look even fancier to other birds than to us.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Bright feathers stand out in the dim forest. Some colors come from fruits the bird eats. Others come from tiny feather structures. And birds have super color vision. They see a whole rainbow we miss. Bright colors are a bird's way of talking.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Birds have a fourth kind of color receptor in their eyes. That lets them see ultraviolet light. People have only three kinds of color receptors. Watch rainforest birds from a distance, and never feed them.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw a made-up rainforest bird. Give it three colors that would help it be seen in the dim forest. Explain why you chose each one. Show your bird to someone you love!

Outro

Bright colors help rainforest birds send messages. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
