Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do tree frogs stick to leaves?

The Big Idea

Tree frogs have sticky toe pads that cling to leaves, even wet, upside-down ones! The pads are covered in tiny bumps and a thin layer of slippery liquid. Together they make a grip that does not let go, even in a rainstorm, when the leaves are slippery.

Tiny Bumps

Step one: tiny bumps. A tree frog's toe pads are covered in tiny six-sided bumps with little channels between them. The pattern bends to fit the surface of a leaf.

Wet Grip

Step two: wet grip. A thin layer of mucus on the pads makes a wet grip, held by surface tension. It works like a drop of water holding two glass slides together.

Cling Anywhere

Step three: cling anywhere. Even a wet, smooth leaf cannot shake the frog loose. A tree frog can hang upside down and nap safely, and it can leap and land again without slipping.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! This is a tree frog. Its toe pads have tiny bumps. A thin layer of mucus sits on top. That keeps it stuck, even on a wet leaf. A tiny, clever grip!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A tree frog can cling to a leaf while hanging upside down. Engineers study toe pads to design new sticky materials. Frog skin is very delicate and can be hurt by touching. So never touch wild frogs. Watch them from far away.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, wet two smooth pieces of plastic and press them together. Try sliding them apart. Then try pulling them straight apart. Which is harder?
