How Does a Forest Heal Itself After a Storm or Landslide?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How does a forest heal itself after a storm or landslide?

The Big Idea

After a storm or landslide, fast-growing pioneer plants, such as Cecropia trees and ferns, spring up in the open light. They shade the soil and make it better for others. Slower, bigger trees arrive later, and over many decades the forest grows back.

Pioneer Plants

Step one: pioneer plants. Fast-growing plants like Cecropia trees and ferns sprout in the open sunlight. They grow quickly, covering bare ground, and some Cecropia trees grow several feet in a year.

Shade and Soil

Step two: shade and soil. Their leaves shade the soil and keep it from drying out. Their fallen leaves make the soil better for others, so the next seedlings have an easier time.

Big Trees Return

Step three: big trees return. Slower, bigger trees that need more shade arrive later. Over many decades, a patch can slowly turn back into a tall forest.

A Closer Look

Let's watch the forest heal! Pioneer plants arrive first, in the open light. They make shade and better soil. Birds and bats drop seeds that start the new forest. Finally, tall trees grow back.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Birds and bats drop seeds that start the new forest. Young forests take a long time to match the variety of old ones. Pioneer trees grow very fast, but do not live as long. Plant seeds with a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, fill a tray with soil and sprinkle fast-growing grass seeds in one corner. Check each day. What is the first plant to appear? How does the area change?
