Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some tropical forests drop their leaves in the dry season?
The Big Idea
Not all tropical forests are wet all year. In places with a long dry season, many trees shed their leaves to save water. Then they grow new ones when the rains return.
Dry Season
Step one: the dry season. Some tropical places go for months with hardly any rain. These are called seasonal or dry tropical forests, and they are found in places like parts of India, Africa, and Central America.
Leaf Drop
Step two: leaf drop. Leaves lose water into the air, so trees drop them to save water. The ground is covered in crunchy leaves, and the forest looks very different from the wet season.
Rains Return
Step three: the rains return. When the rains come back, trees grow fresh new leaves. Flowering often peaks just before or during the first rains.
A Closer Look
Let's compare the seasons! In the wet season, the trees are green. In the dry season, many drop their leaves. Some trees bloom with flowers and no leaves. Then new leaves grow back.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Some trees bloom when they have no leaves at all. Dry tropical forests are also called seasonal forests. New leaves come with the rains, turning the forest green again. Draw with a grown-up nearby.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Make a calendar with two sections: wet season and dry season. Draw a tree with leaves in the wet part. Draw a bare tree in the dry part. Show your calendar to a grown-up.
Outro
Some tropical trees rest in the dry season and wake with the rain. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
