Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What are sunflecks, and how do small plants use them?

The Big Idea

Sunflecks are small patches of sunlight that slip through gaps in the canopy and move across the forest floor. They last only seconds or minutes. For small plants, they can provide much of the energy they need.

Light Through Gaps

Step one: light through gaps. High above, leaves sway and small gaps open for a moment. Bright sunbeams slip through and land on the dark floor.

Moving Spots

Step two: moving spots. As the Sun moves and the breeze blows, the bright spots slide across the ground. A sunfleck can be many times brighter than the shade around it.

Quick Plant Meals

Step three: quick plant meals. Small plants have leaves that wake up and start making food within moments of being lit. These short flashes can provide much of the energy they need.

A Closer Look

Let's find a sunfleck! The Sun shines high above. A gap in the leaves lets a beam through. A bright spot slides across the floor. And a small plant uses it to make food.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! On the dark forest floor, a sunfleck can be many times brighter than the shade. Sunflecks last only seconds or minutes. Small plants wake up fast to use them. Use a flashlight with a grown-up, not a hot lamp.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Poke tiny holes in a piece of foil, with a grown-up helping. Hold it between a flashlight and a table. Move it slowly. Watch the bright spots slide like sunflecks.

Outro

Sunflecks are short flashes of sunshine that feed small plants. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
