What Happens When a Giant Tree Falls in a Rainforest?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What happens when a giant tree falls in a rainforest?

The Big Idea

A falling tree can drag down vines and smaller trees, opening a gap in the canopy. Sunlight pours in, and seedlings that had been waiting in the shade race upward. Within a few years, the gap fills with new green growth.

A Gap Opens

Step one: a gap opens. When a giant tree falls, it can pull down vines and smaller trees with it. That leaves a hole in the leafy roof, and sunshine streams in.

Seedlings Race

Step two: seedlings race. Small plants that had waited in the shade suddenly get bright light. They shoot upward, each trying to become the next canopy tree.

A New Home

Step three: a new home. The fallen log becomes food for fungi and insects. It also makes a home for frogs and lizards. Within a few years, new green growth fills the gap.

A Closer Look

Let's watch a gap grow green! First, a giant tree falls. Then sunlight pours into the opening. Seedlings race upward. And the log shelters fungi, frogs, and lizards.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Gaps in the canopy help keep the forest's variety high. Different plants thrive in different amounts of light. A fallen log can feed and shelter many creatures for years. Use a lamp only with a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, cut a hole in a paper canopy and place it over a tray. Shine a lamp from above. Don't touch the hot bulb. Where does the light fall? Plants sprouting there get a head start.
