Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How does a rainforest help make its own rain?

The Big Idea

Trees pull water from the soil and release it as vapor through tiny pores in their leaves. This is called transpiration. Millions of trees add huge amounts of moisture to the air. That moisture rises, forms clouds, and falls again as rain!

Roots Drink

Step one: roots drink. Roots soak up water from the soil, and it travels up through the trunk to the leaves. It's like a very long straw.

Leaves Breathe Out

Step two: leaves release vapor. Tiny pores in the leaves let water escape as vapor, which is called transpiration. A single big tree can send hundreds of gallons into the air in one day.

Clouds and Rain

Step three: back as rain. The vapor rises, cools, forms clouds, and falls again as rain. In parts of the Amazon, trees recycle a big portion of the rain that falls.

A Closer Look

Let's follow the water! Roots drink water from the soil. Leaves release it as vapor. The vapor rises and forms clouds. Then the water falls as rain again.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! In parts of the Amazon, trees recycle a big portion of the rain that falls. A single big tree can release hundreds of gallons of water in a day. Leaves release water through tiny pores. Do this with a grown-up and a houseplant.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, put a clear plastic bag gently around a leafy houseplant branch on a sunny day. Tie it loosely, and check after a few hours. Droplets inside came from the leaves. Keep bags away from faces, and let the grown-up remove it afterward.
