Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How old are rainforests?

The Big Idea

Some rainforests are among the oldest living ecosystems on Earth. The Daintree Rainforest in Australia is estimated to be about 180 million years old. That is older than the Amazon in its current form.

Stable Climate

Step one: a steady climate. Some places have stayed warm and wet for a very long time. That let their forests keep growing, year after year, without ice or deserts wiping them out.

Time to Evolve

Step two: time to evolve. Plants and animals have had millions of years to change slowly into new species. That is how rainforests became so full of variety.

Dinosaur-Era Plants

Step three: ancient plants. The Daintree has plants related to ones that lived in dinosaur times. Scientists study these plants to learn how plants began and changed. Tall ferns and cone-bearing trees are some of the old kinds.

A Closer Look

Let's travel back in time! Dinosaurs lived from about 230 to 66 million years ago. The Daintree is about 180 million years old. The Amazon in its current form is much younger. And you are here today!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The Daintree has plants related to those that lived in dinosaur times. It is estimated to be about 180 million years old. Stable weather helped rainforests last. Make your timeline with a grown-up, using paper and a pencil.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Take a long strip of paper and make a time line. Mark when dinosaurs lived, when the Daintree began, and today. Which is closer to the start of the line? Show your timeline to a grown-up.

Outro

Some rainforests have grown for millions and millions of years. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
