Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What are the four layers of a rainforest?
The Big Idea
A rainforest has four layers, like floors in a tall building. From top to bottom they are the emergent layer, the canopy, the understory, and the forest floor. Each layer has its own light, temperature, and animals, so each is a different world.
Emergent Layer
Step one: the emergent layer. The very tallest trees poke up above all the rest, into bright sun and wind. Big birds like eagles may nest here, with a view of the whole forest.
Canopy
Step two: the canopy. Below that, branches and leaves form a thick, leafy roof. Monkeys, parrots, and many insects live up here.
Understory and Floor
Step three: the understory and the floor. The understory is a shady zone of small trees, shrubs, and ferns. The forest floor at the bottom is dim, damp, and busy with recyclers.
A Closer Look
Let's look at each layer! At the very top, the emergent trees reach for the Sun. Next down, the canopy is the leafy roof. Then comes the shady understory. And at the bottom is the dim forest floor.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Different animals live at different heights, like families in an apartment building. Each layer gets a different amount of light. The higher you go, the brighter and windier it gets. Draw this with a grown-up nearby for paper and pencils.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Take a long strip of paper and draw a tall four-layer rainforest. Label each layer. Add one animal that might live in each one. Then show your picture to a grown-up.
Outro
A rainforest is a tall home with four layers. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
