Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do paleontologists love deserts and badlands?

The Big Idea

Paleontologists love deserts and badlands because old bones and fossils are easy to find there! Few plants cover the ground, and wind and rain quickly wear away soil. That exposes fossils that were buried for millions of years.

Bare Ground

Step one: bare ground. In dry places, few plants cover the ground. So rock and soil are easy to see, and nothing hides what lies beneath.

Erosion

Step two: erosion uncovers bones. Wind and rain quickly wear away the soil, which exposes old bones and fossils. New fossils can appear after a big storm.

Slow Searching

Step three: search slowly. Scientists walk slowly, looking at the ground for tiny pieces of bone. Fossils must be studied and moved by experts.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! First, find bare ground with few plants. Rain and wind wear the soil away, layer by layer. A tiny bone piece shows. Then experts carefully brush it clean.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The Gobi Desert in Asia has dinosaur fossils, even nests with eggs. The Badlands near Drumheller, Alberta, have yielded many dinosaur fossils, too. If you find a fossil, leave it and tell a ranger. Fossils belong to science, so experts need to study them in place.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Bury a few small toys in a tub of sand. Use a paintbrush to uncover them carefully. Which tool is better, a brush or a spoon? Share what you discover with a grown-up.

Dry, bare land shows off old bones for scientists to find. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
