Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What helps hold sand dunes in place near farms and roads?

The Big Idea

People hold sand dunes in place near farms and roads using plants, fences, and windbreaks! Grasses, shrubs, and trees have roots that grip the sand. Fences slow the wind so it drops the sand it carries.

Plant Roots

Step one: plant grasses and trees. People plant grasses, shrubs, and trees whose roots grip the sand. The roots hold the dunes still, like tiny anchors under the surface.

Build Fences

Step two: build fences and windbreaks. Fences and windbreaks slow the wind, so it drops the sand it is carrying. A row of trees can slow wind down for ten times its own height.

Straw Checkerboards

Step three: protect young plants. Straw checkerboards keep the sand from blowing over tiny new plants. These barriers are not perfect, but they help protect roads, houses, and farms.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Grasses grip the sand with roots. Rows of trees block the wind. Fences make the wind drop sand. And straw squares protect young plants.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A row of trees can slow wind down for ten times its own height. That is a lot of calm air behind them. Slower wind drops its sand, and the sand piles up where it can do no harm. Do the fence test with a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Place small toothpick fences in a tray of dry sand. Blow gently across the sand. Does sand pile up behind the fence? Keep it on a tray. Share what you discover with a grown-up.

Outro

Roots, fences, and windbreaks keep sand dunes in place. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
