Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How can salty water be turned into fresh water?
The Big Idea
Salty water can be turned into fresh water by taking the salt out in a process called desalination! One way uses heat, and another uses super-fine filters. Both leave the salt behind.
Heat and Cool
Step one: heat it up. Heat salty water until it turns into vapor, and the salt is left behind. Then cool the vapor to collect fresh drops. This is how clouds make rain, in a small way.
Super Filters
Step two: use special filters. Another way pushes salty water through super-fine filters. The filters block the salt but let the water pass.
Costs Energy
Step three: think about energy. This is called desalination, and it takes a lot of energy. So many places use it only where fresh water is very scarce.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! We start with salty water. Then we heat it or filter it. The salt gets left behind. And fresh water comes out.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! A small solar still can make a cup or two of fresh water a day. It uses only the Sun's heat, so it needs no electricity. Never drink seawater or salty water. Ask a grown-up first.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist, with a grown-up! Place a small cup in a bowl of salty water. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and put a small stone on top. Leave it in a sunny spot and check for fresh drops in the cup. Do not drink the bowl water. Share what you discover with a grown-up.
