Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do mirror fields in the desert turn sunlight into electricity?

The Big Idea

Mirror fields turn sunlight into electricity by using heat to make steam! Hundreds or thousands of mirrors tilt to follow the Sun. They all bounce sunlight onto one spot at the top of a tower.

Mirrors Follow

Step one: mirrors follow the Sun. Hundreds or thousands of mirrors slowly turn and tilt all day. That keeps the reflected light aimed at the tower, even as the Sun moves across the sky.

Hot Tower

Step two: light meets at the tower. All the mirrors reflect sunlight onto one spot at the top, which gets extremely hot. The glare is dangerously bright, so people watch from a distance and never stare at it.

Steam Power

Step three: heat becomes power. The heat boils water into steam, just like a kettle, but much bigger. The steam spins a turbine, and the turbine makes electricity.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Mirrors aim sunlight at the tower. The tower gets hot. Hot water turns to steam. And steam spins a turbine that makes electricity.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The mirrors turn slowly all day to follow the Sun. Their light is as bright as the Sun, so watch from far away. Never stare at the glare. Never aim a mirror at anyone's eyes.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist, with a grown-up! Use a flashlight, not the Sun, and a small mirror. Bounce the light spot onto a wall. Move the mirror and watch the spot move. Never aim light at anyone's eyes. Share what you discover with a grown-up.

Outro

Mirror fields use sunlight to make heat, steam, and electricity. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
