Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do rocks slide across a dry lakebed?

The Big Idea

Rocks slide across a dry lakebed because of a clever team-up of water, thin ice, and wind! At Racetrack Playa in Death Valley, heavy rocks leave long trails across flat, cracked mud. For years, nobody saw them move.

A Thin Puddle

Step one: a shallow puddle forms. After rain, a thin layer of water covers the flat, muddy lakebed. The mud gets very slippery, like a wet slide.

Ice Panels

Step two: ice forms at night. A thin sheet of ice forms on the puddle. When the ice cracks, it breaks into floating panels around the rocks.

Wind Pushes

Step three: a light wind pushes. A gentle wind nudges the ice panels, and they push the rocks slowly across the wet mud. In 2014, scientists used GPS and time-lapse cameras and solved the puzzle.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! First, a thin puddle covers the mud. Ice panels float on it. A light wind pushes the ice. And the rock slides, leaving a trail.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some rocks have left trails hundreds of feet long. The rocks move only a little at a time, and only on rare days when everything lines up. Scientists solved the mystery with GPS and cameras. Visitors must never push or move the rocks.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Put a small block on a smooth tray with a thin layer of water. Blow very lightly on it. Does it slide more easily than on a dry tray? Share what you discover with a grown-up.
