Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What is a monsoon season in a desert?

The Big Idea

A monsoon season is a time of year when winds shift and bring moist air to a dry place! In parts of the southwestern United States and Mexico, it happens in summer. It brings thunderstorms and sudden rain.

Winds Shift

Step one: the winds shift. In summer, winds bring moist air from the Gulf of California and the Pacific Ocean. That air carries lots of water vapor, which is the fuel for storms.

Afternoon Storms

Step two: afternoon storms build. From about July to September, hot afternoons grow towering clouds with thunderstorms and sudden rain. By evening the storms usually fade.

Desert Turns Green

Step three: the desert wakes up. The desert turns green and smells fresh after the rain. But flash floods are possible, so be careful near washes.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Mornings are often sunny, hot, and clear. By midday, clouds start to pile up. In the afternoon, thunderstorms roll in. By evening, the sky calms down again.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The word monsoon comes from an Arabic word for season. It means the season of the winds, which fits the way breezes change direction. Monsoon rain feeds many desert plants and animals. When thunder rumbles, go indoors.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw a calendar strip for a monsoon summer. Mark mornings with a sun and afternoons with a storm cloud. Why do clouds grow in the afternoon? Hint: the ground heats up all day. Share what you discover with a grown-up.
