Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why can palm trees grow at an oasis?
The Big Idea
Date palms grow at an oasis because they love hot sunshine, but their roots also need lots of water! At an oasis, water is close to the surface, so the roots can drink. Palms do not grow in dry sand without water.
Sun Lovers
Step one: date palms love sunshine. They grow tall in hot, bright places where many other trees would struggle. But sunshine alone is not enough.
Thirsty Roots
Step two: palm roots need water. At an oasis, the water is close to the surface, so the roots can reach it. Without water nearby, a palm cannot survive in dry sand.
Three Layers
Step three: palms make shade. Tall palms shade the ground, so smaller fruit trees can grow underneath. Vegetables grow on the cool ground below. Farmers call this three-layer farming!
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! On top are tall date palms, catching the sunshine. In the middle grow smaller fruit trees in the shade. Near the ground are low vegetables, in cooler air. And everything shares the water below.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! One date palm can grow 100 pounds or more of dates in a year. That is a lot of sweet fruit from one tree! The palm's crown makes a cooler layer of shade. Keep out of the hot Sun, and drink water.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Draw an oasis farm with three layers. Add the Sun's rays, and show where the shade falls. Then explain it to someone at home! Share what you discover with a grown-up.
Outro
Palms thrive at an oasis because they have sunshine and close water. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
