Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Who eats what in a desert food chain?

The Big Idea

A desert food chain shows who eats what, starting with plants! Plants use sunlight to make their own food, so they are called producers. Then animals pass that energy along when they eat, one link at a time.

Plants First

Step one: plants first. A food chain starts with plants, which use sunlight to make food. Without plants, none of the desert animals could survive.

Seed Eaters

Step two: seed eaters. Seed eaters, such as mice and ants, eat the seeds. Then lizards, owls, and snakes eat the seed eaters, and they need the seed eaters to survive.

Hunters and Recyclers

Step three: hunters and recyclers. Larger hunters, like hawks and coyotes, eat the smaller hunters. When any plant or animal dies, insects and tiny decomposers recycle it.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The plant makes food from sunlight. The mouse eats the seeds. The owl hunts the mouse. And tiny recyclers return nutrients to the soil.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Without plants, none of these animals could survive in the desert. Arrows in a food chain point toward the animal that does the eating. Many animals eat more than one thing, so food chains tangle into webs that connect the whole desert. Explore gently, and leave no trace.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw a food chain with arrows going from the plant to a seed eater to a hunter. Add a desert animal you learned about. Where does it fit? Share what you discover with a grown-up.
