Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do desert geckos have such big eyes?
The Big Idea
Desert geckos have big eyes because they hunt at night and need to gather every bit of light! Their pupils open wide in the dark, to let in every bit of light. In daylight, they shrink to tiny pinholes.
Night Hunters
Step one: night hunters. Many geckos hunt at night, when the desert is cooler. Their large eyes gather as much faint light as they can.
Slit Pupils
Step two: slit pupils. Their pupils are slits that open wide in the dark. In daylight, they shrink to tiny pinholes to protect the eyes from the bright light, and the geckos hide in shade.
Lick Clean
Step three: lick it clean. Some geckos have no eyelids, so they lick their eyes clean with their tongues. Some species also have special toe pads for climbing, which let them walk up rocks and walls.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! The big eyes catch faint light. In the dark, the pupils open wide. In the daytime, they shrink to slits. And the tongue keeps each eye clean.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! A gecko's eyes can see color even in dim light. Many people cannot see colors at all in very dim light. Some geckos can make chirping or clicking sounds. Look at geckos from a distance, and never grab one.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist, with a grown-up! Dim the lights, and look at your pupils in a mirror. Have the grown-up switch on a room light, and watch your pupils shrink. Never stare at a bright bulb. Your eyes change like a gecko's! Share what you discover with a grown-up.
