Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do bats help desert plants?

The Big Idea

Bats help desert plants by carrying pollen from flower to flower at night! The bats drink sweet nectar, and pollen from the flowers dusts their fur. That helps the plants make fruit and seeds.

Spring Travelers

Step one: spring travelers. Lesser long-nosed bats fly north to the Sonoran Desert in spring. They arrive when agave and saguaro flowers are opening, right on time for the nectar.

Sweet Nectar

Step two: sip nectar. At night, the bats drink sweet nectar from the flowers. Pollen sticks to their fur and faces.

Pollen Delivery

Step three: deliver the pollen. When a bat visits the next flower, some of the pollen rubs off. That helps the plants make fruit and seeds, and in return, the bats get a high-energy meal.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The bat visits a flower at night. The flower offers sweet nectar. Pollen sticks to the bat's fur. And the next flower makes fruit and seeds.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Agave flowers open at night to match the bats' schedule. A bat has a long tongue to reach deep into a flower. Many other bats eat lots of insects too, including pests that bother people and plants. Never touch a wild bat. If you see one on the ground, tell a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Pretend to be a bat. Dip a cotton swab in flour and tap it on a flower made of paper. See how the powder moves from one place to another. That is pollen traveling! Share what you discover with a grown-up.
