Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some desert leaves stand on edge instead of lying flat?

The Big Idea

Some desert leaves stand on edge or hang down, so they catch less hot sunlight! It is a clever shade trick that works without any shade at all. Leaves held flat catch the most light and warmth.

Flat Leaves

Step one: flat leaves. A leaf lying flat faces the strong midday Sun and catches a lot of light and heat. A hot leaf loses more water, and water is hard to find in a dry land.

Turn Sideways

Step two: turn on edge. Many plants in Australia's hot, dry lands hang their leaves nearly straight down or point them toward the Sun. That way the flat sides catch less of the strongest sunlight.

Stay Cool

Step three: stay cool. Cooler leaves lose less water, so the tree can keep growing through long dry spells. Some eucalyptus trees have leaves that hang down like curtains.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A flat leaf faces the Sun and gets hot. Strong sunlight hits the whole surface. An edge-on leaf shows only a thin edge. Many eucalyptus trees in Australia use this trick.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some eucalyptus leaves hang down like little curtains. Edge-on leaves catch less light at midday, when the Sun is strongest. Leaves held flat catch the most light and warmth. Never look straight at the Sun.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist, with a grown-up! Hold a paper leaf flat toward a flashlight, then turn it so its edge faces the light. Notice how the shadow changes. The smaller shadow shows less light caught. Share what you discover with a grown-up.

Edge-on leaves catch less Sun. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
