Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do so many desert plants have thorns or spines?

The Big Idea

Desert plants have thorns and spines because they hold precious water, and animals would eat them! Sharp points make a bite painful, so most animals give up. Spines can also do other helpful jobs.

Guard the Water

Step one: guard the water. In a dry land, a juicy plant is a treat for hungry animals. The plant needs its water, and it cannot run away from a hungry animal, so it needs another way to stay safe.

Spines and Thorns

Step two: grow sharp points. Cactus spines are leaves in disguise, and mesquite and acacia grow tough thorns. These sharp points make it painful to bite the plant.

Extra Jobs

Step three: spines do more. Spines can shade the plant's skin from strong sunlight. They can also gather drops of dew, and some have tiny hooks that grab passing animals.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A cactus holds a lot of water. Its spines stick out in clusters. They make a little shade on the skin. And dew can collect on them in the cool night.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A cactus spine is really a leaf that changed into a needle. Mesquite and acacia trees grow tough thorns. Some cactus spines have tiny hooks that catch on passing animals. Please look, but do not touch, because spines can hurt.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist, with a grown-up! Look at a photo of a spiny plant. Count how many spine clusters you can find on one inch of the plant. Never touch spiny plants! Share what you discover with a grown-up.
