Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does the ocotillo grow leaves only after it rains?
The Big Idea
The ocotillo grows leaves only after it rains, so it does not waste water! Most of the year, it looks like a bundle of dead sticks. After rain, it turns green in just a few days.
Stick Time
Step one: stick time. Most of the year, the ocotillo is a bundle of spiny, bare stems. With no leaves, it loses very little water, so it can survive long dry spells.
Rain Arrives
Step two: rain arrives. After rain, small green leaves pop out along the stems within days. Now the plant can catch sunlight and make lots of food while the soil is damp.
Back to Sticks
Step three: back to sticks. When the soil dries, the leaves turn yellow and drop off. Some parts of the stems stay green, so the plant can still make a little food.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at the ocotillo! In dry times, it is a bundle of bare sticks. Then rain falls on the soil. New leaves pop out all along the stems. And when the dry weather returns, they fall off again.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Ocotillo is said oh-kuh-TEE-yo. It can leaf out and drop its leaves several times in one year. Its bright red flowers attract hummingbirds. Look out for spines, and never touch spiny plants.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Make a pipe-cleaner ocotillo with bare sticks. Tape on paper leaves for a rainy day, and take them off on a dry day. Leaves on and off is the plant's trick! Share what you discover with a grown-up.
