Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some desert insects have waxy skin?
The Big Idea
Insects lose water through their outer shell, and in a dry place that can be a big problem! Many desert beetles and ants have a waxy layer on the outside. It works like a raincoat in reverse, keeping water inside.
Water Escapes
Step one: water escapes. An insect's outer shell is not completely sealed. In dry air, water slowly leaks out and evaporates, and a tiny body has very little water to spare.
Add Wax
Step two: add wax. Many desert beetles and ants have a waxy layer on the outside. The wax coating can cut water loss a great deal.
Wax Reflects
Step three: a bonus. The wax also helps reflect sunlight. So the insect stays a little cooler and loses even less water.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! The insect has a hard shell. A thin layer of wax covers it. Water stays inside. Sunlight bounces off. A small coat with big benefits, because every drop of water counts in the desert.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Candles are made from a similar kind of wax. The wax is made by the insect itself, in tiny glands under its shell. Some beetles have wax that looks white or blue. Look at insects without touching them, and wash your hands after you play outside.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Put one drop of water on a waxed paper square. Put one drop on regular paper. Watch what each does. Wax keeps water out, just as insect wax keeps water in.
Outro
