Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do birds cool off without sweating?

The Big Idea

Birds cannot sweat, but they have other ways to cool off! They open their beaks and flutter their throat skin so water evaporates from the mouth and throat. That carries heat away, a bit like a dog panting on a warm day.

Pant and Flutter

Step one: pant and flutter. A hot bird opens its beak and flutters the skin of its throat. Water evaporates from its mouth, and that carries heat away.

Wings Away

Step two: wings away from the body. Some birds hold their wings out from their sides to let heat escape. Others simply stand in shade, where the air is cooler, and wait for the evening.

Cool Legs

Step three: cool legs. Birds' legs have bare skin with blood vessels near the surface. Blood loses heat to the air there, just like it does in big ears.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The beak opens wide. The throat skin flutters. The wings lift away from the body. The legs release heat too. Birds are clever cooler-uppers, even without a single sweat gland.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some desert birds panting rapidly can cool off in minutes. Panting works best when there is a shady spot nearby. Birds also rest in the shade during midday. Always put out bird water in shade for wild birds, with a grown-up's help.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Hold your hand in front of your mouth and breathe out fast, like panting. Do you feel a little cooling as moisture evaporates? Now breathe slowly and compare. Stop if you feel dizzy.

Outro

Birds cool off by panting, fluttering, and finding shade. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
