Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do animals stay warm on a cold desert night?

The Big Idea

Desert nights can get chilly, but animals have many ways to stay warm! Burrows, rock crevices, and nests protect them from the cold air above ground. Fur, feathers, and fat trap body warmth.

Shelters

Step one: find a shelter. Burrows, rock crevices, and nests block the chilly wind. The ground below keeps its warmth longer than the air above does.

Warm Coats

Step two: warm coats. Fur and feathers trap a layer of warm air near the body. Some animals also huddle together to share warmth.

Slow Down

Step three: slow down. Many reptiles slow down and rest until the Sun warms the ground again. Some small mammals can even lower their body temperature for a few hours to save energy.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A burrow blocks the cold wind. Feathers and fur trap warm air. Animals huddle to share warmth. And some just slow down and rest. Many different tricks keep them cozy until the Sun comes back.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some birds in the desert go into a short, deep sleep called torpor. During torpor, the body slows way down and uses very little energy. They wake up when the morning Sun warms the air. Never disturb sleeping animals, and keep your distance.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, fill two mugs with warm water, not hot. Wrap one in two socks and leave one bare. After 20 minutes, touch each. Trapped air is a great blanket.

Outro

Burrows, fur, feathers, and rest keep desert animals warm at night. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
