Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do living things stay cool in a place with no air conditioning?

The Big Idea

Desert plants and animals use many clever tricks instead of cooling machines! They rest in shade or underground, come out when it is cooler, and wear pale colors that reflect sunlight. Each trick saves energy and water.

Hide from the Heat

Step one: hide. Many desert animals rest in shade or in underground burrows during the hottest hours. They come out at dawn, at dusk, or at night, when it is cooler.

Reflect the Sun

Step two: reflect sunlight. Pale fur, feathers, and leaves bounce sunlight away. A light color absorbs less heat than a dark one.

Release the Heat

Step three: release heat. Big ears and thin bodies help heat escape into the air. Some animals pant, and some lose heat when a little water evaporates.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Hide in shade or a cool burrow. Reflect sunlight with a pale color. Release heat through big ears or by panting. Or just come out when the Sun goes down. Each living thing mixes its own set of tricks.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! There is no single desert trick. Each species mixes its own set of cool tricks. Every trick saves energy and water. People stay cool by wearing a hat, finding shade, and drinking water.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Make a cool tricks list with three columns: hide, reflect, and release heat. Add one animal or plant to each column as you learn about them in this book. Fill it in slowly. Share your list with a grown-up.
