Why Does the Desert Sky Seem to Sparkle with Stars at Night?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does the desert sky seem to sparkle with stars at night?

The Big Idea

The desert sky sparkles with stars because desert air is dry and often very clear! There are few clouds and little haze to blur the starlight. Many deserts are also far from city lights.

Clear, Dry Air

Step one: clear, dry air. Dry desert air has few clouds and little haze. That means starlight can travel to your eyes without much blurring.

Far from Cities

Step two: far from cities. City lights make the sky glow and wash out faint stars. Many deserts are far from cities, so the sky stays dark.

Thousands of Stars

Step three: thousands of stars. On a moonless night, thousands of stars show up clearly. You can even see the Milky Way, our galaxy, stretching across the sky.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Few clouds block the view. There is no bright city glow. The Milky Way shows up as a glowing band. That is why many telescopes are built in deserts. Scientists love dark, dry skies.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The Atacama has some of the clearest night skies in the world. Giant telescopes there study faraway galaxies. On a dark night, you can see thousands of stars. Stargaze with a grown-up, and dress warmly, because deserts get cold at night.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Visit a dark spot with a grown-up on a clear night. Hold your fist at arm's length. Count how many stars you see in a patch of sky that big. Write down your number.
