Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How does wood turn into stone?
The Big Idea
A fallen tree can turn into stone over millions of years! If it is buried quickly by mud or ash, little air reaches it, so it does not rot. Minerals then slowly replace the wood and keep its shape.
Buried Fast
Step one: a tree is buried fast. Mud or volcanic ash covers a fallen tree before it can rot. With little air to help the rot, the wood stays in one piece for a very long time.
Minerals Seep In
Step two: minerals seep in. Water carrying minerals like silica trickles through the wood. The minerals slowly replace the wood, one tiny cell at a time.
Wood Turned Stone
Step three: wood turned to stone. The stone keeps the shape of the wood, even the bark and growth rings. It is called petrified wood, which is really stone that looks like a tree.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! First, a tree falls down. Second, it gets buried quickly. Third, minerals fill in the wood. And the log turns into stone. You can still see the rings.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Petrified wood can show growth rings from trees that lived 200 million years ago. Some of those trees grew when the first dinosaurs roamed. It weighs like rock, not like wood. Many parks protect it, so leave it where you find it.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Hold a stick and a rock of the same size. Which one feels heavier? Petrified wood weighs like the rock. Stone took the place of the wood.
Outro
