Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why was the Sahara green thousands of years ago?

The Big Idea

About 10,000 to 6,000 years ago, the Sahara had lakes, grassy plains, and animals like hippos! Earth wobbles very slowly as it spins around the Sun, and that wobble moved the rainy winds. When the rain faded, the green land slowly turned into desert.

A Green Sahara

Step one: picture a green Sahara. Thousands of years ago, it had lakes, rivers, grassy plains, and animals like hippos and giraffes. People lived there too and herded cattle.

Earth Wobbles

Step two: Earth's tilt slowly wobbles. Over thousands of years, the wobble changes where the Sun shines most strongly. Back then, it pushed more rainy monsoon winds farther north into the Sahara.

The Rain Fades

Step three: the rain faded. When the wobble changed, the monsoon winds moved back south. Plants slowly died back, the lakes dried up, and the green land became desert.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Ancient rock paintings in the Sahara show cattle and swimmers. Bones show that hippos once lived there. Monsoon winds brought the rain. And a slow wobble in Earth moved those winds away. These clues help scientists read the past.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The Sahara was green from about 10,000 to 6,000 years ago. Rock paintings there show cattle and swimmers. The change took thousands of years, not days. Use a lamp only with a grown-up, and never touch a hot bulb.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, tilt a globe a little toward a lamp, then away. Notice how the light falls on different places. A tiny tilt change over thousands of years can shift where the rain goes. Never touch the lamp bulb, because it gets hot.

Outro

The Sahara dried out slowly because Earth's tilt changed the rain. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
